[3/7/2003 9] Contractors invited to make tender for tunnel drilling

The procurement process for the Citytunnel project are entering a new phase today. The inquiry documentation for the project's biggest contract, E201 tunnel and underground cavity, is sent to pre-qualified contractors for bidding.

The contract involves two parallel tunnels, each six kilometres long, between Malmö Central Station and Holma, and the underground cavity for the Triangeln station. Approximately 4.5 kilometres will be bored with a shielded tunnel drill press (TBM).

The bored tunnels to the south will merge with a concrete tunnel, from this point a ramp will connect to the railway tracks on the surface. The Triangeln station is approximately 25 meter below surface. A 250-meter long, 14.4 meter wide platform divide the two tracks.

The construction project for the tunnel and the underground section of the Triangeln station is estimated at 3 BSEK. In the pre-qualification process, the Citytunnel project reviewed the bidding companies' qualifications, experience and suitability. The process was concluded in spring 2002.

Now that the government granted the permissibility, the inquiry documentation will be sent to pre-qualified contractors. A contract is expected to be signed in February 2004.

The Citytunnel project, which is made up of 17 kilometres of railway connecting Malmö Central Station and the Öresund Bridge, brings together the railway systems in Southern Sweden and increases the capacity for railway traffic in the future. The Citytunnel project is made up of a six-kilometre-long tunnel under central Malmö and eleven kilometres of railway above ground. Malmö Central Station will be added with an underground section. New stations will be built at Triangeln in the centre of Malmö and in Hyllie south of Malmö.

The Citytunnel project is planned to be finished in 2009. The cost of the project is estimated at 8.8 BSEK according to monetary value in 2001.
