This is the Citytunnel project

A local, regional and national project

Citytunneln is a rail project that favours not only Malmö, Skåne and the rest of the Öresund region but the whole of southern Sweden. It will create a fast and efficient connection from the major rail routes of the Southern main line and the West Coast main line to the Öresund Bridge as well as to the Ystad and Trelleborg lines. For Malmö, Citytunneln means that the Central station will be an even more important junction than before while, at the same time, the inner city will become even more alive. Citytunneln is also a project that has major environmental benefits.

Malmö C Nedre (lower)

Malmö Central station is extended with an underground station section - Malmö C Nedre. The station is constructed using cut and cover. When Citytunneln is complete, 85% of all trains that arrive Malmö will continue southwards through the tunnel and then on to Ystad, Trelleborg or Copenhagen via the Öresund Bridge. At present trains need to drive into Malmö Central and turn in order to continue southwards. Read more >>

The tunnel section

Of the project’s overall 17 km, 6 km comprises two parallel tunnels with single tracks below Malmö. The tunnel extends from Malmö C to the district of Hyllievång in south Malmö. Four and a half kilometres of tunnel will be bored with the help of two specially-built tunnel boring machines. The remaining part of the tunnel is a cut and cover construction. Read more >>

The boring method has been used in many locations worldwide. Read more >>

Triangeln Station

Triangeln station is built as an underground station 25 metres below ground level. The station will change the day-to-day lives of many people both where work and leisure are concerned. The two exits are located strategically opposite the Triangeln shopping centre to the north and the Faculty of Odontology to the south. It is expected that 37,000 will travel daily to or from Triangeln station. Read more >>

The Citytunneln Line, Holma – Hyllie - Vintrie

The Citytunnel project includes building a connecting track that will increase the capacity of the rail system in Skåne.

The tunnels’ southern exit will be just south of Annetorpsvägen in the Holma area. From here the railway goes southwards in a cut, in other words an open shaft below the surrounding land. Holma is also the heart of the tunnel construction process. This is where the tunnel boring machines will start and where the concrete segments will be manufactured.

On the stretch that passes through the district Hyllie, the railway line will continue on in a open shaft, which are approximately 4-7 metres below the ground surface. This is to reduce noise pollution and facilitate the construction of graded level crossings for vehicles.

From Hyllie station the connecting tracks will continue westward over Lorensborgsgatan to the Öresund bridge and eastwards towards Lockarp. Read more >>

Hyllie Station

Hyllie station is built above ground and will be the centre of the new district of Hyllievång. With its proximity to Kastrup, Sturup, central Malmö, the inner and outer ring road and the rest of Skåne, Hyllie station will be an important link for travel in the future. A new district will evolve around the station. There are plans to build 7,000 homes and provide an equal number of jobs as well as an arena, shopping centre and hotel. Read more >>

Lockarp

At Lockarp the tracks will connect from the Öresund line with a branch to the Ystad line and the Continental line to Trelleborg. The new connecting tracks will provide a major benefit for people’s travel within and outside Malmö. Read more >>
