The Citytunnel is a railway project that will impact the entire Öresund region. The Citytunnel will create a fast and efficient connection track between the Southern Trunk Line and the Öresund Link.
Distances will be shortened and this will strengthen the region. For Malmö, the Citytunnel will increase the significance of the Central Station as a node, and the centre of the city will become even more vibrant.
The Citytunnel Project will make journeys easier for rail passengers by providing more stations, fewer changes and shorter travelling times. It will also make it possible for more trains to pass through the city.
The construction of the Citytunnel will mean that a greater number of people will be able to leave their cars at home. Travelling to work, and to cultural and entertainment events in the region will be simplified.
In Malmö alone, around 35 000 people will be within walking distance of the new Triangeln station. Anyone getting off the train at Triangeln will be just a few minutes from shops, galleries, theatres and the hospital - no need for complicated changes of transport or a frustrating search for a parking space.
Rail traffic over the Öresund bridge has already exceeded all forecasts. Travelling over the Öresund by train will be even easier when the Citytunnel is completed. It i estimated that traffic will increase by a further 40 percent. The number of rail passengers to and from Ystad and Trelleborg is expected to increase by 600 percent.
The Citytunnel is an important link in a close network of rapid rail connections in the region. The Citytunnel will allow several new direct lines to open between the region's towns. Furthermore, the indivudal traveller will be able to take full advantage of the opportunities afforded by the Öresund Bridge.
